A Touch For The Now

A Touch For The Now

Plastic-Myths-Poster_redux

Plastic Myths

Plastic Myths starts with the question how Asia was invented. For over two centuries following the Industrial Revolution and the rise of Capitalism, Asia existed as the non-Western ‘other’. Very few similarities are shared among Asias in terms of identity, besides geopolitical proximity; each ‘smaller Asia’ has a unique blend of religion and folk belief, ethnicity and societal idiosyncrasy. Cultural heterogeneity is an important characteristic to the concept of Asia, the ethnic category, which carries the implicit heterogeneity of the region. Plastic Myths is an exhibition-cum-live event that asks the question ‘how was Asia invented?’ to gather the plurality of Asia’s myths, or rather the ‘smaller Asias’ into one place.

Plastic Myths looks to myths not only as stories of the past, but also as an observation of the ‘here and now’ that continues to change into different ‘futures’. If we were to define myths as an oral tradition of natural or societal origins told by those within the tradition for the purpose of explaining the present, the same question applies to 2015. What perspectives do our present myths hold to the individuals and the society as a whole? This would be the origins of future mythologies that concur in Asia and extend to the wider world.

The exhibition space consists of 30 individual cells that are independent and simultaneously convergent in what they achieve. Here there is no Asia bundled into a melting-pot and objectified by the other’s gaze. Here is the current status of diverse Asias, unafraid to criticize ethnocentrism and squaring up with the inherent contradictions of Asia’s modernity, presenting layers upon layers of aesthetics. Asia’s contemporary aesthetics are a living community, and the stories they tell are myths not only of the future of Asia, but of the world.

New-Money

Million Well Spent, You Son of a Collector

Tonight’s sale totaled $705.9 million with all but 1 of the 35 lots sold. Bidders from 35 countries – but mostly “new money” (as in 5-10 years collecting , max) as “old money” wouldn’t spend at these levels (but they like to sell at these levels). Certainly huge record price of nearly $180 million for the great Picasso and a sculpture record of over $141 million fro the Giacometti.

Singaporean who are in the Arts, Culture and Entertainment industries were the most stressed group of people who received the lowest pay. Workers in this industry receive a measly $300 to $1,000 SGD a month. So much for the renaissance city

Thousand-Knives

Thousand Knives

“Water that cold, like right down there, it hits you like a thousand knives stabbing you all over your body.”

So mused Leonardo Dicaprio, in a career-defining role, as he gazed down into the abyss of the Atlantic. Channelling the soap-operatic romanticism and tragic sentimentality of the big screen, here is the misty-eyed celluloid melodrama of Titanic’s narrative of cruel fate and lost love writ large. Here is the magic of the amusement park disenchanted, a carnival transformed into a spectacle of bitter irony, its melancholia shot through with a sense of the mordant; here is autobiography, a tale of heartbreak and personal failure, presented as a lugubrious wonderland, marked by humour black as pitch. Wong Lip Chin’s Thousand Knives was born of a relationship that, by the artist’s own reckoning, failed disastrously. In a moment of almost self-flagellating confession, he observes: “The very basis of human relationships, those rarely visible layers of desire and conflict, provides ample space for cheating, lying, conspiracy and fraud.” The body of work started out, then, as an imagined visual dialogue between himself and the woman who left him in emotional tatters. Some seven years in the making, Thousand Knives is a deeply personal project for Wong, drawing upon reservoirs of scabrous, unresolved feelings, about loving and leaving, about being loved and being left, about being an artist and being an Artist.

The endothelial cells that line the inside of your arteries are the Achilles’ Heel of your circulatory system. This thin protective coating is only one cell thick and if it gets compromised then arterial health declines. Your endothelial cells are also regulators of how your arteries function, especially in terms of blood pressure. A new study indicates that coenzyme Q10 is a best friend to your endothelial cells.

Most scholars who deal with objects recovered from prehistoric contexts that cannot be explained in utilitarian terms and are thus categorized as decorative, ritual or symbolic, are aware of the trap posed by the term ‘art’.

Recent developments in archaeology and anthropology have brought into question our conception of prehistoric images as art.
